The Lochaber Childcare & Family Resource Partnership
In May 1998 the Government published 'meeting the childcare challenge' - A childcare strategy for Scotland '. One of a number of measures aimed at supporting families and in particular raising children out of poverty. The strategy recognised that good quality childcare has benefits for children by promoting their development and learning, and benefits for parents, by enabling them to work, access training or provide respite opportunities.
In response to driving this agenda forward locally the Lochaber Childcare & Family Resource partnership was formed in the same year. The partnership has bought together local Highland Council service managers and development staff, voluntary organisations, health representatives, parents and elected members. It is a fully constituted voluntary body.
Over the years the Partnership has driven forward the development of new childcare services, supported existing provision and taken on a new remit to look at family support services in addition to childcare matters.
Work has included;
- Supporting the establishment of new parent and toddler groups
- Increased play scheme provision
- Development of a toy library lending service
- Increased childcare & family support provision
- Improved and new training opportunities
- Supporting the development of new 'sure start' funded services
Following a review of its local strategy, a new development plan will come into force in August (2005) this year for 3 years. The strategy outlines the development of new childcare provision, sustaining of existing services, increased support to families as well as planned developments for access to improved outdoor play opportunities, new staff bank service and further development of the toy library.
To support the implementation of this plan we are currently seeking new members to oversee the work, monitor progress and input into the allocation of grant funding for local initiatives. This is an exiting and interesting opportunity that makes a real difference to childcare and family support services locally.
